Plone 4 brings significant performance improvements. It is about 50% faster than Plone 3, is more memory efficient, has search / indexing improvements and serves massive files & video easily. Plone 4 also features a new theme that is accessible and easy to customize, a polished user interface that was refined to be even more intuitive, and a new graphical HTML editor (TinyMCE).

“Plone 4 provides a world class user experience. It also silences its critics on many aspects such as performance, flexibility and deployment configuration.” says Alan Runyan, President of Enfold Systems and Co-Founder of the Plone CMS. “In addition, this new version of the book serves as an ideal support tool to enable end users to be self sufficient. This is vitally important for large scale organizations to have this type of support material.”

Enfold Desktop - Windows 7 / Plone 4 compatibility

Enfold Systems will work with the Plone community and current users to determine the future of Enfold Desktop.

Currently, there are no definite plans for the future of Enfold Desktop. With virtually no paying customers, the cost to maintain the product has become too expensive for us to actively maintain on our own. Therefore, we are considering making Enfold Desktop open source software.

As part of this effort we may ask current users to chip-in to help us fund the effort to make the software compatible with Windows 7 and Plone 4. If you are interested in helping, please let us know by joining + emailing the Enfold Desktop community mailing list.

As more information becomes available, we will post on our website and to this list. Our goal is to make a final decision regarding Enfold Desktop’s future by the end of September, 2010.

Technical Contributions

ZODB 3.9.5
The ZODB 3.9, or newer, did not calculate the size of items in memory. Enfold identified and resolved the issue, allowing users to constrain the amount of RAM a Zope / Plone process uses to a specific size.

Also, If you attempted to run the ZODB in optimized mode, it would fail. Enfold also addressed this issue and the fixes have been merged and incorporated into recent versions of the ZODB.

Plone 3.3.x now compatible with ZODB 3.9
Enfold has patched Zope 2.10/11.x to now support the ZODB 3.9. These changes are in the process of being merged with future releases.

Enfold Systems has released the final, production-ready, version of Enfold Proxy 6.0

Enfold Proxy 6.0 is a major release of Enfold Systems Microsoft IIS Web Server integration with Plone. This sixth major version is the result of on numerous experiences on recent client engagements and requests by Enfold Proxy implementers. The result; organizations running Windows now have the ability to handle significantly more advanced deployment scenarios than in the past. New features in Enfold Proxy 6.0 include:

Load balancing based on criteria

Enfold Proxy can now be configured based on HTTP request parameters to route requests to specific load balancing pools. Three practical cases used in production include: logged in users, anonymous users, and crawlers. Systems with heavy crawler activity can offload to a machine with less resources and reserve premium resources for editors or the public.

XDV integration

Enfold Proxy now supports XDV, a theming mechanism which enables site designers to more easily apply a new design using content generated from the Plone CMS. An example is taking a static XHTML/CSS design and replacing different aspects of the static page with dynamic information from Plone.

The 6.0 release resolve numerous bugs inside of load balancing connection handling, cache efficiency and installation.

Updated and improved Enfold Proxy documentation.
